What about foreigners whose short-term residence visas expire and who cannot return to their country of origin, or whose country prohibits entry from France for health reasons, or whose country faces the same health problems? Or because of air traffic disruption?
In case of a justified emergency, a person with a short-term residence visa in France can obtain an extended short-term residence visa (90 days) or a temporary residence permit (3 months is recommended). Please contact "Préfecture" where you live.
These emergencies are dealt with on a case by case basis by the "Préfecture". Agencies are required to organize specific ways to receive the public in order to take into account these legitimate user emergencies and avoid the consequences of an irregular stay in France. In special cases, visa extension is free of charge.
Similarly, a person in such a situation in another country in the Schengen region must apply to the local authorities, who have the right to extend the Schengen visas even if they are issued by the French Embassy or Consulate.
